In June 2015, Le Barboteur—a specialty beer café and bottle shop—opened in Schaarbeek, Brussels.
The bar—also known as La Bièrothèque—set itself up on the site of a defunct bookstore, changing the shelves into displays for bottles and serving beers on tap from the old bookstore counter.
Its owner, Sébastien Albanese, has been instrumental in promoting good beer in Brussels in recent years, co-organising the “Swafff” festivals during the last two summers and championing small, independent and interesting breweries from Belgium and other parts of the world.
This June 2018, for the third birthday party of Le Barboteur, we brewed a one-off collaboration beer with Albanese and his colleague Florent Yobov, producing a beer for easy drinking on sunny days in Schaarbeek.
Siphonneur is a light gold, crisp and crushable “Belgian Kölsch-Style Ale” of 4.5% ABV, inspired by the top fermented but lagered hybrid beers produced around the German city of Cologne as defined by the Kölsch Konvention of 1986.
It showcases a 100% pils malt base, Citra and Mandarina Bavaria hops and a subtle fruity yeast character.
It’s name (Siphonneur) mirrors the name of the café (Barboteur) and suggests its suited to someone who likes to ‘siphon’ beer from their glass into their mouth at a noticeably frequent pace.
