Hitting a ‘triple’ in baseball is when the batter safely reaches third base after striking the ball. It’s colloquially called a ‘Three Bagger’.

Good things come in threes.

In 2016, we brewed a low alcohol rye ale in Belgium with Kinnegar Brewing of Ireland which made use of three hop varieties, three types of malt and three top fermenting yeast strains. The beer—which we called ‘Rule of Three’—finished at 3.3% ABV.

The return leg at Kinnegar—in their new K2 facility in Letterkenny—has a similar slant.

Head Brewer, Rick LeVert, originally comes from Boston, where the Red Sox inspire religious fervour and where Fenway Park is a temple.

We took a swing and brewed one wort—Three Bagger—which will eventually become three different beers.

The ‘1st Base’ is the clean Tripel (8% ABV), fermented with a characterful Belgian ale yeast and showcasing a whirlpool addition of the Centennial hop variety.

The ‘2nd’ and ‘3rd’ bases will be subjected to wild fermentation and ageing. Watch this space.

Three Bagger (1st Base) will be launched at 'Belgian Night' on Friday 22 December 2017 at Boundary Brewing in Belfast.
